dorset-ccDorset County Council is proposing to reorganise schools in Purbeck from the present 3-tier system (First, Middle and Upper) into a 2-tier system (Primary and Secondary). If this happens then all four middle schools will close, as will some first schools. Many parents are happy with the current system and oppose the proposals. The main point of this posting however is that we believe that parents have not been considered as stakeholders and were not involved at an early enough stage of the review process which led to the proposals. Consequently, at the public consultation stage we are presented with just one option. We believe that Dorset has failed us as parents, by not involving us at an earlier stage.

Andy has summed it up very well.
I too am opposed to the closure of any schools in the Purbeck area and the proposed change to a two tier system.

DCC have not fully consulted with students, parents or teachers on all the solutions that might have been put forward. So how can they call the current exercise a consultation?

Let us please have a proper review involving all interested parties with no preconceived or half-baked ideas.

Change is proposed not because the 2 tier system is inherently better but because of a desire to lose ’surplus’ places. In fact it is not clear that the formulae used to calculate surplus places, produces figures that make sense but this particular solution must be both the most expensive option & the most disruptive for our children’s education. It ignores the fact that it will mean the closure of some successful schools & it ignores the fact that it will mean the expansion of some schools which are less successful. Closing good schools & expanding less successful schools is likely to drive parents away, ensuring continued surplus places in the future. Standards will not be raised by thischange, they can only fall as a result.

My daughter is due to start at Wareham Middle school in September, if implemented the changes would mean that she will have three years in a school with closure hanging over it & in those three years, what was a good school will change. Recruitment of good teachers will become impossible, the best staff will leave & those who do not will be worrying for their own future. Dorset County Council is betraying teachers who have done a good job by our children. Many dispute that there is any gain from the proposed change but certainly the pain they propose to inflict, is not worth any conceivable gain.

Changing the school system will take time, be chaotic, hugely expensive to implement and disruptive to students’ education for years, but there is no information in the consultation document about how the changeover will be managed. It is staggering that there is also no mention in the consultation document that the proposals will improve education for our children!

Adequate funding is not in place for this project and the recession will further disrupt financing it. Money allocated to the reorganisation would be much better spent on correcting any shortfall areas and improving the current provision. The most important thing an LEA can invest in is the quality of teaching. Surplus places are not an issue in the Dorchester pyramid of schools…

Interesting discussion in Parliament on Monday night (6th July 2009)regarding Three-tier Education in Bedfordshire. Check out Hansard for that day or copy & paste http://www.publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm200809/cmhansrd/chan106.pdf in your browser
