Parents Right to withdraw Pupil from SATs

5 May 2009 1,064 views 5 Comments

conf1Sats tests have been criticised by teaching unions in recent weeks, culminating in a decision by headteachers to proceed with a boycott of exams in 2010. I am attempting to find parents who may be acting early by withdrawing their children from Sats being taken in schools across England this month. If you intend to keep your child off school on the day of the tests please contact Graeme Paton at The Daily Telegraph by emailing: graeme.paton@telegraph.co.uk.

Yes - withdrawing my son - only from English since thats the one he is stressed about. Told school - interesting response!

They gave 5 main responses during a ‘chat’ with class teacher and Head.
    It would impact school stats
It would impact class teacher’s targets and thus professional development
What will happen when he takes his GCSEs
He is absolutely fine at school about them
There will probably not be SATs at KS2 in two years anyway

Oh - and he must not tell anyone because it will cause trouble with other children and parents

Looking at the responses from the school, I think the school statistics reply was probably the most honest out of all of them. It WILL adversely affect the headline data of the school, which is - in most cases- some of the only evidence that OFSTED use to measure a school’s progress, sadly. If those results show a decline, then they can be in serious trouble. Pressures on Heads to keep striving for excellence (outstanding) is shocking, and pulling out children just ads to it, I feel (my opinion). I feel for the Head of the school. I also think SAT’s are a terrible measure of a child’s whole development, but I think it is punishing the school a little, for a system they HAVE to implement, if children are withdrawn. I think!

I’ve had Year 6 children sitting SATs with a sick bucket because they were so scared about letting the school down and clearly should have been at home! As a parent and a teacher I have long complained about how SATs and the need for a school to succeed at them is a terrible strain on everybody. I have also been in a school which went into Special Measures due to SATs results and that is no fun either.
As a teacher I used to groan when parents kept children at home at SATs time but as a parent with an anxious child I can’t help but agree with them.
