School Places Problems

3 April 2009 1,607 views 2 Comments

_40023940_classroom203I have 5 year old twin boys and they were both placed at a school some distance from our house which was not on our preferred list. They have been on the waiting list for their preferred school and a place arose for one of the twins. However, Brighton & Hove Council insisted that we either take the place or lose it. They were not willing to keep the place open until a second arose. Needless to say we declined the place as both for psychological and practical reasons. We are now back on the waiting list hoping that 2 places come up at once! I have e-mailed the Assistant Director of Child Services about the situation but received no reply. My local Councilor has said she cannot help any further. My local MP is going to take it up with the council but they seem in transient. He has said he will petition the Secretary of State if necessary although Brighton & Hove do seem to ignore his suggestions. Does anybody have any suggestions how I might solve this problem?

1)Have you appealed the original placement decision?
    2) Accepting the school places offered does not diminish your right to appeal or to be put on the waiting list
    3) You probably only needed one place because you would then have very strong grounds (sibling, catchment, proximity etc) to appeal for the other twin.

If a place comes up then take it.

I understood that starting school had to be made as stressless as possible for these small children, obviously not.I wonder what impact
this trauma will have on these children in later years. My daughter is having the same problem with her twins. The whole system is idiotic
when there are other parents who are travelling to the school that is on the parents doorstep that have been refused their local school.
I never had this problem when my children were at school, it was so simple you went to the school that was in your catchment area and not a bus ride away, the sooner we return to that the better. I am sure it would be a lot healthier for the children as the schools where within walking distance.
