Stay on Site Policy
Ed Balls wants healthy eating to extend beyond the school gates. He says he supports “stay-on site” policies, in which pupils are not allowed to leave school premises during the day – stopping them from eating in local fast-food shops. Is this practical who will supervise the pupils, let’s remember we are talking up to and over 12 hundred young people. Can schools afford supervisors remember whilst pupils are on site their safety is the school responsibility and supervision is costly. How many schools have a canteen that can feed these numbers of pupils in a relatively short lunch break? Surely the issue government should be looking into is the banning of the sale of unhealthy food it cannot be beyond the realms of possibility to have regulations on the fat and sugar content of food we all need protecting. It is a concern that we have over weight youngsters but we need to look medically at the reasons. My generation was post war food was scarce and rationed and many of us were under nourished despite our parents’ best efforts, now two generations on things have changed and the weight that we called correct is going to be higher. With the best will in the world how practical is it to read every label before we purchase food so let’s get some sensible regulation in place and not yet again expect schools to solve every problem government is faced with. Locking young people in all day may well result in binge eating at four o’clock.

When pupils are at school… they should stay at school.
I had to stay in school grounds at lunch time.. we are so soft on kids nowadays – poor johnny only likes eating burgers.. well poor johnny will have to like it or lump it! Come on.. lets get real for a change.
Any pupils outside of the school gates between 9 and 3:30 will be disciplined. They can bring a packed lunch, or buy a lunch from the canteen. There will be no burgers. There is no excuse..
Schools should know a thing or two about rules and how to enforce them.. so that bit should be very easy.
We’ve lost all control over our kids.. that’s why they are getting so fat. We need to make them play by the rules. In the long term they’ll be a lot better off for it.
I agree with your sentiments Jake it is safer for pupils to be on site and parents know where they are during schoolhours, ideally eating and attending school clubs mostly under supervision. The problem is the world has advanced swifter than the government. Food is far more available than in the 50′s and even the 60′s we did not have endless fast food outlets but market economy has over taken all. What we must accept however all fast food does not need to be bad for us so lets get some thinking going on encouraging healthy fast food shops and get the junk food banned.
I agree that the students should not be allowed to leave the school at break or lunchtimes. They are eating poorly, some cause problems, and they are exposing themselves to risks (i.e. no crossing guards). It is also not always easy for the school to properly monitor who is allowed out or not.
