league tables for toddlersAnna Davis, Education CorrespondentParenting experts today warned against introducing “league tables” for toddlers, after it was revealed that a new report will call for more checks on the development of babies. The government-commissioned report, by Labour MP Graham Allen, calls for regular assessments of the social and emotional development of every baby.Infants would enter “year one” at birth rather than when they started school, and carry on in years that corresponded with their age. Health and education professionals would visit homes to see if parents were stimulating their babies.Mr Allen, who said too many children enter school not able to speak properly or recognise letters and numbers, will call for an outline of the levels they are expected to achieve by then.

“You don’t want parents obsessed with when their child crawls – some never crawl.” Margaret Morrissey of campaign group Parents Out Loud said: “We do not need to drag children into the education world when they are 24 hours old. We will see league tables for babies.”
